  1  3 A Resolution congratulating the Homesteaders Life
  1  4    Company on its centennial year.
  1  5    WHEREAS, in 1905 twenty=two people gathered at the
  1  6 home of John E. Paul to discuss the formation of a
  1  7 fraternal order and in 1906 "The Homesteaders" was
  1  8 founded as a fraternal insurance society; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, in that year of 1906 the first policy was
  1 10 issued to Supreme President Paul; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, during its first century the company
  1 12 evolved from a fraternal insurance society to an
  1 13 insurance association in 1923 and finally, in 1948,
  1 14 into the mutual insurance company that exists today;
  1 15 and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Homesteaders Life Company provides
  1 17 insurance funding products and support for funeral
  1 18 homes that offer advance funeral planning as an
  1 19 extension of funeral service; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, originally headquartered at the Securities
  1 21 Building in downtown Des Moines, Homesteaders built
  1 22 its own building in downtown Des Moines in 1951; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, after many remodels and additions,
  1 24 Homesteaders outgrew its home on Grand Avenue and
  1 25 relocated to West Des Moines, where the company, and
  1 26 135 employees, is now based; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, Homesteaders has now served millions of
  1 28 families in its 100=year history and, with 7,000
  1 29 agents, the company is licensed to do business in
  1 30 every state except New York; and
  2  1    WHEREAS, in 2004, Homesteaders reached $1 billion
  2  2 in assets and is one of two major national
  2  3 organizations focused on preneed insurance funding;
  2  4 and
  2  5    WHEREAS, Homesteaders Life Company has a singular
  2  6 commitment to the success of its funeral home
  2  7 customers and to preserving the value of funeral
  2  8 service; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  9    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 10 congratulates the Homesteaders Life Company on its
  2 11 centennial year and for its role in the history and
  2 12 the future of the state of Iowa.
