Senate Resolution 11 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY ANGELO 1 3 A Resolution honoring and celebrating the life of 1 4 Iowa's own Johnny Carson. 1 5 WHEREAS, with the passing of Johnny (John William) 1 6 Carson on January 23, 2005, Iowa has lost one of its 1 7 favorite and most accomplished sons; and 1 8 WHEREAS, Johnny Carson was born in Corning, Iowa, 1 9 on October 23, 1925; and 1 10 WHEREAS, he also lived in Clarinda, Red Oak, and 1 11 Avoca, before leaving the state at the age of eight 1 12 and growing up in Norfolk, Nebraska; and 1 13 WHEREAS, Johnny Carson was the undisputed king of 1 14 late=night television, hosting The Tonight Show from 1 15 1962 to 1992 and winning several Emmy Awards in the 1 16 process; and 1 17 WHEREAS, Johnny Carson never forgot his Iowa roots, 1 18 as he demonstrated by featuring a "Corning Night" on 1 19 The Tonight Show, donating funds for an art center in 1 20 Red Oak, Iowa, providing some $75,000 for a skate park 1 21 in Corning, Iowa, happily inviting Iowans to become 1 22 guests on his show, and winning the coveted title, 1 23 "Cooper, Iowa's 51st Citizen", in competition with 1 24 game=show host Bob Barker, Henry "Fonzie" Winkler, and 1 25 Princess Grace of Monaco; NOW THEREFORE, 1 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 1 27 celebrates the life and accomplishments of Johnny 1 28 Carson, a man of wealth and fame who recognized the 1 29 value of making people laugh and who never forgot his 1 30 Iowa roots, characteristics which made him 2 1 unforgettable to citizens throughout the state. 2 2 LSB 2122SS 81 2 3 jr:nh/gg/14 1
