Section 91D.1, subsection 1, paragraph a, Code 1 2 2005, is amended to read as follows: 1 3 a. The hourly wage stated in the federal minimum wage law, 1 4 pursuant to 29 U.S.C. } 206, shall be increased to$3.85$6.00 1 5 onJanuary 1 of 1990July 1, 2005,$4.25$6.50 onJanuary 1 of 1 6 1991July 1, 2006, and$4.65$7.00 onJanuary 1 of 1992July 1 7 1, 2007. 1 8 Sec. 2. Section 91D.1, subsection 1, paragraph d, Code 1 9 2005, is amended by striking the paragraph. 1 10 EXPLANATION 1 11 This bill raises the state's hourly minimum wage each year 1 12 of the next three years to: $6.00 on July 1, 2005, $6.50 on 1 13 July 1, 2006, and $7.00 on July 1, 2007. The Code currently 1 14 provides for a minimum wage rate of $4.65, but because the 1 15 federal minimum wage laws have primacy over state minimum wage 1 16 laws unless the state sets a higher minimum wage, employers of 1 17 the state must pay the federal hourly rate of $5.15, which 1 18 took effect September 1, 1997.
