1 An Act relating to voluntary mental health screening of teenage

3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 1 Section 1. Section 225C.4, subsection 1, Code 2005, is
1 2 amended by adding the following new paragraph:
1 3 NEW PARAGRAPH. t. Work with the departments of education
1 4 and public health in expanding the availability and public
1 5 awareness of services making voluntary mental health
1 6 screenings available to adolescent youth. The purpose of
1 7 expanding the services is to provide early identification of
1 8 mental illness, prevent suicides, and link those in need with
1 9 further assessment. In performing this duty, the
1 10 administrator shall utilize expertise and funding available
1 11 under the federal Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act, Pub. L. No.
1 12 108=355, and other public and private resources providing
1 13 support for such services.
1 14 EXPLANATION
1 15 This bill relates to voluntary mental health screening of
1 16 teenage youth. The duties of the administrator of the
1 17 department of human services for mental health, mental
1 18 retardation, developmental disabilities, and brain injury
1 19 services are expanded to require the administrator to work
1 20 with the departments of education and public health in
1 21 expanding the availability and public awareness of services
1 22 making voluntary mental health screenings available to
1 23 adolescent youth. The bill describes the purpose of expanding
1 24 the services and directs the administrator to make use of
1 25 expertise and funding available under the federal Garrett Lee
1 26 Smith Memorial Act and other public and private resources
1 27 providing support for such services.
