  1  1    Section 1.  Section 257.6, subsection 1, Code 2005, is
  1  2 amended by adding the following new paragraph:
  1  3    NEW PARAGRAPH.  g.  Nonresident pupils who are enrolled in
  1  4 the district for the entire school year pursuant to a foreign
  1  5 exchange program approved by the department.  The department
  1  6 shall establish approval criteria by rule.  A school district
  1  7 shall report the number of foreign exchange students enrolled
  1  8 in the district when certifying enrollment to the department
  1  9 by October 1 annually pursuant to this subsection.
  1 10                           EXPLANATION
  1 11    This bill provides for the inclusion of foreign exchange
  1 12 students in the actual enrollment of a school district.  The
  1 13 bill provides that nonresident pupils who are enrolled in the
  1 14 district for the entire school year pursuant to a foreign
  1 15 exchange program approved by the department of education shall
  1 16 be included.  The bill provides that the department shall
  1 17 establish approval criteria by rule.  The bill additionally
  1 18 provides that a school district shall report the number of
  1 19 foreign exchange students enrolled in the district when
  1 20 certifying enrollment to the department by October 1 annually.
