  1  1    Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  307.19  DEER FENCE PROGRAM.
  1  2    1.  The department shall develop a deer fence program to
  1  3 install fence in the public right=of=way to prevent deer from
  1  4 crossing onto primary roads.  The department shall collaborate
  1  5 with the department of natural resources and may collaborate
  1  6 with the insurance industry of Iowa to implement the deer
  1  7 fence program.
  1  8    2.  The department shall use its best efforts to obtain and
  1  9 utilize federal highway safety funds and other grants to
  1 10 install fence in the right=of=way of those primary roads, or
  1 11 portions thereof, that have a high incidence of deer=related
  1 12 motor vehicle accidents.
  1 13                           EXPLANATION
  1 14    This bill directs the state department of transportation to
  1 15 develop a deer fence program to install fence in the public
  1 16 right=of=way to prevent deer from crossing onto primary roads.
  1 17 The department is further directed to work with the department
  1 18 of natural resources and the insurance industry of Iowa to
  1 19 implement a deer fence program.  The department is required to
  1 20 use its best efforts to obtain and utilize federal highway
  1 21 safety funds and other grants to erect fence along roads with
  1 22 a high incidence of deer=related motor vehicle accidents.
