1 1 Section 1. Section 282.3, subsection 2, unnumbered
1 2 paragraph 3, Code 2005, is amended to read as follows:
1 3 No A child shall not be admitted to school work for the
1 4 year immediately preceding the first grade unless the child is
1 5 five years of age on or before the fifteenth of September 15
1 6 of the current school year. However, a child who is five
1 7 years of age after September 15 of the current school year and
1 8 who has demonstrated the possession of sufficient ability to
1 9 benefit from kindergarten work on the basis of tests or other
1 10 means of evaluation recommended or approved by the department
1 11 of education may be admitted to kindergarten if the department
1 12 approves the admission prior to August 1.
1 13 EXPLANATION
1 14 This bill allows a child who is five years of age on or
1 15 after September 15 to be admitted to kindergarten if the child
1 16 has demonstrated the possession of sufficient ability to
1 17 benefit from kindergarten work on the basis of evaluations
1 18 recommended or approved by the department of education and if
1 19 the department approves the admission prior to August 1.
1 20 Currently, no child shall be admitted to kindergarten unless
1 21 the child reaches the age of five on or before September 15.
