1 1 Section 1. Section 279.61, Code Supplement 2005, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 279.61 STUDENT PLAN FOR PROGRESS TOWARD UNIVERSITY
1 4 ADMISSIONS == REPORT.
1 5 1. For the school year beginning July 1, 2006, and each
1 6 succeeding school year, the board of directors of each school
1 7 district shall cooperate with each student enrolled in grade
1 8 eight to develop for the student a core curriculum plan to
1 9 guide the student toward the goal of successfully completing,
1 10 at a minimum, the model core curriculum developed by the state
1 11 board of education pursuant to section 256.7, subsection 26,
1 12 by the time the student graduates from high school. The plan
1 13 shall include career options and shall identify the coursework
1 14 needed in grades nine through twelve for the student's
1 15 transition into the appropriate career or postsecondary
1 16 institution. If the pupil is under eighteen years of age, the
1 17 pupil's parent or guardian shall sign the core curriculum plan
1 18 developed with the student and the signed plan shall be
1 19 included in the student's records.
1 20 2. For the school year beginning July 1, 2006, and each
1 21 succeeding school year, the board of directors of each school
1 22 district shall report annually to each student enrolled in
1 23 grades nine through twelve in the school district, and, if the
1 24 student is under the age of eighteen, to each student's parent
1 25 or guardian, the student's progress toward meeting the goal of
1 26 successfully completing the model core curriculum developed by
1 27 the state board of education pursuant to section 256.7,
1 28 subsection 26.
1 29 EXPLANATION
1 30 This bill requires the core curriculum plan developed for a
1 31 student by a school district in cooperation with the student
1 32 to be signed by the student's parent or guardian if the
1 33 student is under 18 years of age. The plan must include
1 34 career options and shall identify the coursework needed to
1 35 transition to a career or postsecondary institution. The plan
2 1 must also be included in records the school district maintains
2 2 regarding the student. The bill makes a conforming change.
2 3 Under the Code, the core curriculum plan is a tool to be
2 4 used to guide students toward the goal of successfully
2 5 completing, at a minimum, the model core curriculum developed
2 6 by the state board of education.
