  1  3 A Resolution requesting the establishment of a
  1  4    legislative interim study committee to review the
  1  5    adequacy of school bus and school bus operator safety
  1  6    requirements established in Code and administrative
  1  7    rules.
  1  8    WHEREAS, Iowa's public school districts transport
  1  9 an average of 235,723 students to school each year
  1 10 over 43,267,951 route miles; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, though by far the safest mode for
  1 12 transporting students is by school bus, recent
  1 13 accidents indicate that opportunities may exist for
  1 14 further improvements in safety requirements; NOW
  1 15 THEREFORE,
  1 16    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  1 17 That the legislative council is requested to establish
  1 18 an interim study committee to review the adequacy of
  1 19 Iowa's school bus and school bus operator safety
  1 20 requirements established in Code and administrative
  1 21 rules, consider the adequacy of the requirements, to
  1 22 determine whether further measures, including but not
  1 23 limited to requiring all school buses to be equipped
  1 24 with seat belts, are needed to protect children
  1 25 transported by schools and school districts, and to
  1 26 submit its findings and recommendations in a report to
  1 27 the general assembly by December 15, 2005.
