House Resolution 40 - Introduced PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY ARNOLD and WHITAKER 1 3 A Resolution honoring the city of Eddyville on its 1 4 165th anniversary. 1 5 WHEREAS, the city of Eddyville is named after its 1 6 founder, Jabish P. Eddy, and is located on the Des 1 7 Moines River, at the junction of Wapello, Mahaska, and 1 8 Monroe Counties; and 1 9 WHEREAS, in 1840, Jabish P. Eddy trekked westward 1 10 from Warren, Ohio, to the Iowa Territory and 1 11 established an Indian trading post on the land of the 1 12 Sac and Fox Indian tribes; and 1 13 WHEREAS, the Eddy trading post was a pioneer 1 14 outpost located far west from other settlements, 1 15 established in Chief Hard Fish's village, near the 1 16 mouth of the Muchakinock Creek on the banks of the Des 1 17 Moines River; and 1 18 WHEREAS, when the Sac and Fox Indians left in 1842, 1 19 some 10 families remained around the trading post, and 1 20 Jabish Eddy was appointed as an Indian agent; and 1 21 WHEREAS, in 1843 this "new purchase" land was 1 22 opened to settlers and J.P. Eddy laid out 160 acres of 1 23 his own land for a town plot with a public square in 1 24 the center; and 1 25 WHEREAS, the town, which was later named Eddyville 1 26 and incorporated in 1857, quickly became a 1 27 transportation hub for stagecoach, steamboat, and 1 28 railroad traffic, as well as a terminal for the 1 29 Western Union telegraph line; and 1 30 WHEREAS, the population of Eddyville has grown from 2 1 some 300 residents in 1851 to some 700 residents in 2 2 1878 to over 1,000 residents in 2005; and 2 3 WHEREAS, 165 years after it began as an isolated 2 4 trading post, Eddyville is now home to a vast billion= 2 5 dollar biotechnology complex employing over 1,000 2 6 Iowans; and 2 7 WHEREAS, the city of Eddyville is celebrating its 2 8 165th anniversary with a community celebration on July 2 9 9, 2005; NOW THEREFORE, 2 10 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 2 11 That the House of Representatives recognizes and 2 12 extends its congratulations to the residents of 2 13 Eddyville on their city's 165th year and invites all 2 14 Iowans to make the July celebration in Eddyville part 2 15 of their summer plans. 2 16 LSB 3570HH 81 2 17 jr:nh/sh/8 1
