  1  4    JACOBY, ZIRKELBACH, GASKILL, ROBERTS, QUIRK, MAY,
  1  5 WESSEL=KROESCHELL, BAUDLER, JACOBS, MILLER, and HUTTER
  1  6 A Resolution posthumously honoring His Holiness Pope
  1  7    John Paul II and commemorating his life's work.
  1  8    WHEREAS, in 1978, the Bishop of Krakow, Poland,
  1  9 Karol Wojtyla, was elected as Pope of the Roman
  1 10 Catholic Church, taking the name John Paul II; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, the odyssey of his papacy covered more
  1 12 than 104 overseas trips to over 130 countries,
  1 13 covering almost 690,000 miles and lasting more than a
  1 14 quarter of a century, making Pope John Paul II the
  1 15 widest=traveled Pope in history, and one of the
  1 16 longest=serving; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, on October 4, 1979, in response to an
  1 18 invitation from the late Bishop Maurice Dingman and
  1 19 rural Truro farmer Joe Hays, that odyssey brought him
  1 20 to Iowa; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, on that date some 380,000 people crowded
  1 22 into Living History Farms on the outskirts of Des
  1 23 Moines; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, the Pope then celebrated a two=and=one=
  1 25 half=hour mass and delivered a homily praising farmers
  1 26 and telling them, "You who are farmers today are
  1 27 stewards of a gift from God ... You have the potential
  1 28 to provide food for the millions who have nothing to
  1 29 eat and thus to help rid the world of famine"; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, for the next 25 years the Pope continued
  2  1 his travels, promoting peace and the dignity of human
  2  2 life and championing the cause of human rights,
  2  3 particularly the rights of children; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II was an ecumenical pope,
  2  5 reaching out to Protestant and Orthodox denominations;
  2  6 and
  2  7    WHEREAS, Pope John Paul II sought to engage in
  2  8 dialogue with other world faiths, becoming the first
  2  9 pope to visit a Jewish synagogue since the age of
  2 10 Peter, and in 2001 becoming the first pope to enter an
  2 11 Islamic mosque, and later placing a handwritten prayer
  2 12 in the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem; and
  2 13    WHEREAS, after a lifetime of service to humanity
  2 14 and devotion to God, Pope John Paul II died on
  2 15 Saturday, April 2, 2005; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 16    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 17 That the House of Representatives honors the memory
  2 18 and lifework of Pope John Paul II and on behalf of its
  2 19 members expresses heartfelt condolences on his death.
