1 3 A Resolution honoring all legislative branch employees
1 4 who volunteered their time and efforts to make the
1 5 2004 Annual Meeting of the Midwestern Legislative
1 6 Conference of the Council of State Governments a
1 7 successful meeting of Midwestern state and Canadian
1 8 provincial legislators and their staffs.
1 9 WHEREAS, the State of Iowa was honored to host the
1 10 Midwestern Legislative Conference of the Council of
1 11 State Governments in Des Moines, Iowa, on July 11
1 12 through 14, 2004; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the Midwestern Legislative Conference is
1 14 the regional organization for legislators and
1 15 legislative staff from the Midwestern states of the
1 16 United States and from three Canadian provinces,
1 17 formed for the purpose of developing and examining
1 18 public policy options for the Midwest and the Canadian
1 19 provinces; and
1 20 WHEREAS, this year's legislative conference
1 21 presented an informative program regarding issues and
1 22 subjects of concern to the member states and provinces
1 23 of the Midwestern Legislative Conference, including
1 24 issues of regional economic development, agriculture,
1 25 health care, education, and corrections; and
1 26 WHEREAS, the Annual Meeting included an enjoyable
1 27 program of entertainment and recreational events, with
1 28 an opening night reception at the State Historical
1 29 Building, a family night event at Living History
1 30 Farms, and the State Dinner in the State Capitol
2 1 rotunda; and
2 2 WHEREAS, other meeting events and activities for
2 3 attendees, spouses, guests, and youths included
2 4 attending an Iowa Cubs baseball game, visits to
2 5 Meredith Corporation, Terrace Hill, Summerset Winery,
2 6 Sportsplex West, and the Science Center of Iowa,
2 7 geocaching for treasure, participating in a book drive
2 8 service project for Capitol View Elementary School
2 9 students, and enjoying a one=man performance of "Grant
2 10 Wood" at Hoyt Sherman Place; and
2 11 WHEREAS, nearly 100 employees of the Legislative
2 12 Services Agency, the Office of the Citizens'
2 13 Aide/Ombudsman, the House of Representatives, and the
2 14 Senate volunteered hundreds of hours of their time to
2 15 assure that all meeting events and activities were
2 16 planned, well staffed, and met the needs of all
2 17 attendees; and
2 18 WHEREAS, legislative staff showed their
2 19 resourcefulness, utilizing previously untapped skills
2 20 as greeters, vehicle drivers, registration and
2 21 information desk staff, event and transportation
2 22 planners, tour leaders, talent bookers, event
2 23 budgeters, food servers, and leaders of children; and
2 24 WHEREAS, the evaluations of and comments on the
2 25 meeting overwhelmingly praised the welcome and
2 26 hospitality shown to all attendees by legislative
2 27 branch employees serving as Iowa ambassadors; NOW
2 28 THEREFORE,
2 29 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 30 That the House of Representatives proudly honors the
3 1 volunteer efforts of all legislative branch employees
3 2 who assisted in making the Annual Meeting of the
3 3 Midwestern Legislative Conference such a spectacular
3 4 success.
