  1  9        MILLER, JACOBY, HOGG, DANDEKAR, TOMENGA,
  1 10                    MAY, and DE BOEF
  1 11 A Resolution recognizing the continuing efforts by
  1 12    Iowans in providing disaster relief in response to
  1 13    Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  1 14    WHEREAS, since August 2005 Iowans and Iowa
  1 15 organizations have come forward, in hundreds of ways,
  1 16 to provide desperately needed relief to their fellow
  1 17 Americans whose lives were devastated by Hurricanes
  1 18 Katrina and Rita; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, by April 2006 some 424 Iowans have now
  1 20 provided over 9,100 total person days of service,
  1 21 offering hurricane relief in a variety of ways; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, since September 2005, 15 individuals,
  1 23 working in a variety of capacities at the University
  1 24 of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, have been conducting
  1 25 newborn screening tests on samples sent from
  1 26 Louisiana; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, the Homeland Security and Emergency
  1 28 Management Division of the Iowa Department of Public
  1 29 Defense deployed three staff members to the State
  1 30 Emergency Operations Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
  2  1 deployed one staff member to the National Response
  2  2 Coordination Center in Washington, D.C., to coordinate
  2  3 response activities, deployed one staff member to the
  2  4 State Emergency Operations Center in Jackson,
  2  5 Mississippi, to assist with response coordination, and
  2  6 deployed one staff member to the State Emergency
  2  7 Operations Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to assist
  2  8 with the requests for aid from other states; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, the Iowa National Guard deployed 13
  2 10 soldiers of the 185th Air Refueling Wing and a 200
  2 11 kilowatt electric generator to Belle Chase Naval Air
  2 12 Station in Louisiana, deployed 197 soldiers of a
  2 13 medical battalion to act as a security force and
  2 14 provide water purification units to Camp Shelby,
  2 15 Mississippi, deployed 40 crew members of the 185th Air
  2 16 Refueling Wing and four KC=135E Stratotankers to
  2 17 perform evacuation, transport, security, and fuel
  2 18 handling missions, deployed the 71st Civil Support
  2 19 Team of 20 members to complete sample analysis in
  2 20 Carville, Louisiana, and deployed a physical therapist
  2 21 and a biomedical laboratory specialist to Mississippi;
  2 22 and
  2 23    WHEREAS, the Iowa Department of Public Health
  2 24 deployed a team of 30 health professionals, including
  2 25 doctors, nurses, paramedics, and environmental health
  2 26 specialists, to Louisiana State University; and
  2 27    WHEREAS, the Iowa Department of Human Services
  2 28 deployed 10 human service workers to assist parishes
  2 29 with food stamp relief program efforts; and
  2 30    WHEREAS, the Bettendorf Fire and Rescue Department
  3  1 deployed two staff members and one vehicle to support
  3  2 the New Orleans Fire Department; and
  3  3    WHEREAS, the City of Davenport deployed 14 staff
  3  4 members to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, to assist with
  3  5 recovery efforts for its water and sewer systems; and
  3  6    WHEREAS, the Civil Air Patrol deployed a two=person
  3  7 team on an aerial damage assessment mission to Texas;
  3  8 and
  3  9    WHEREAS, these agencies and organizations are made
  3 10 up of hundreds of Iowans, from all walks of life, who
  3 11 have unselfishly offered their time and the expertise
  3 12 in service to Americans in desperate need; NOW
  3 13 THEREFORE,
  3 14    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  3 15 That the House of Representatives recognizes the
  3 16 dedication and sacrifice of those Iowans who provided
  3 17 aid and comfort in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina
  3 18 and Rita, and on behalf of all Iowans thanks them for
  3 19 a job well done.
