1 2 BY BERRY, KRESSIG, SHOULTZ, JENKINS, REASONER, FORD,
1 3 OLDSON, PETERSEN, R. OLSON, HUNTER, McCARTHY, and
1 4 FALLON
1 5 A Resolution congratulating the Iowa communities named among
1 6 the 100 Best Communities for Young People.
1 7 WHEREAS, Black Hawk County and the cities of Des
1 8 Moines and Lamoni have been named by America's
1 9 Promise==The Alliance for Youth as winning communities
1 10 in a first ever national competition to identify 100
1 11 Best Communities for Young People; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Black Hawk County and the cities of Des
1 13 Moines and Lamoni are being celebrated for their
1 14 commitment to provide safe, healthy, and caring
1 15 environments for young people; and
1 16 WHEREAS, these Iowa communities were among the
1 17 winners chosen by a distinguished selection panel of
1 18 civic, business, and nonprofit leaders including
1 19 United Way of America president Brian Gallagher,
1 20 United States Chamber of Commerce president Tom
1 21 Donohue, NBC Washington Bureau chief and moderator of
1 22 Meet the Press Tim Russert, former United States
1 23 Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala,
1 24 baseball great Cal Ripken, Jr., and former Denver
1 25 mayor Wellington Webb; and
1 26 WHEREAS, Black Hawk County is being recognized, in
1 27 part, for the innovative programs benefiting its young
1 28 people, including the local Kids Cafe that provides
1 29 after school tutoring, a healthy meal, and mentoring
1 30 to local children, the Trolley Kids program that
2 1 provides transportation for children to safe
2 2 activities during the summer, and the Family and
2 3 Children's Council's What's Where in Parenting
2 4 resource directory of activities and services
2 5 available for youth in the community; and
2 6 WHEREAS, the city of Des Moines is being
2 7 recognized, in part, because of its youth programs
2 8 including the Youth Advisory Board, an appointed
2 9 policy=making body of fifteen youths and seven adults,
2 10 and the United Way's Emerging Leaders Initiative that
2 11 is working to create lasting change in community
2 12 conditions affecting youth; and
2 13 WHEREAS, the city of Lamoni is being recognized, in
2 14 part, for its programs that focus on the community's
2 15 "small town, rural work ethic" to ensure that youth
2 16 learn responsibility, teamwork, and leadership skills,
2 17 including the Across Ages mentoring program matching
2 18 at=risk middle school youth with senior adults in the
2 19 community; and
2 20 WHEREAS, the citizens of Iowa are justly proud that
2 21 Black Hawk County and the cities of Des Moines and
2 22 Lamoni are communities awarded recognition for their
2 23 commitment to safe, healthy, and caring environments
2 24 for young people; NOW THEREFORE,
2 25 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 26 That Black Hawk County and the cities of Des Moines
2 27 and Lamoni are congratulated for their communities'
2 28 commitment to young people; and
2 29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon passage,
2 30 enrolled copies of this Resolution be sent to
3 1 representatives of Black Hawk County and the cities of
3 2 Des Moines and Lamoni.
