1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY JENKINS and KRESSIG
1 3 A Resolution honoring Robert Koob, President of the
1 4 University of Northern Iowa.
1 5 WHEREAS, Robert Koob was born in Graettinger, Iowa,
1 6 graduated from Hawarden High School in 1959 and from
1 7 the University of Northern Iowa in 1962, and in 1967
1 8 received a doctorate in chemistry from the University
1 9 of Kansas; and
1 10 WHEREAS, Dr. Koob has always been a devoted
1 11 educator, holding positions as a teaching assistant at
1 12 the University of Kansas, a high school math and
1 13 science teacher in Moville, Iowa, and a researcher at
1 14 the University of Kansas; and
1 15 WHEREAS, in 1967 he began teaching chemistry at
1 16 North Dakota State University as an assistant
1 17 professor, achieving the rank of professor by 1972,
1 18 and thereafter serving in several different positions
1 19 including vice president for academic affairs and
1 20 interim president; and
1 21 WHEREAS, from 1990 to 1995, Dr. Koob was senior
1 22 vice president and vice president for academic affairs
1 23 at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis
1 24 Obispo, California; and
1 25 WHEREAS, in 1995, Dr. Koob returned home to Iowa,
1 26 taking his place as the eighth president of the
1 27 University of Northern Iowa and the first alumnus to
1 28 assume the presidency; and
1 29 WHEREAS, under his leadership, the University of
1 30 Northern Iowa experienced a phenomenal level of
2 1 institutional development, including construction of
2 2 the Gallagher=Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, the
2 3 Freeburg Early Childhood Program, and the Center for
2 4 Multicultural Education, the expansion of McCollum
2 5 Science Hall, Lang Hall, and Maucker Union, and
2 6 groundbreaking on the McLeod Center and the Business
2 7 and Community Services building; and
2 8 WHEREAS, President Koob has always been involved in
2 9 the larger community, currently serving as a co=chair
2 10 of the Institute for Tomorrow's Workforce and also
2 11 serving on the Iowa Empowerment Board, Iowa Education
2 12 Roundtable, Iowa Business Council, Governor's
2 13 Strategic Planning Council, Iowa Commission on
2 14 Volunteer Services, Iowa Coordinating Council for Post
2 15 High School Education, Iowa Association of College
2 16 Presidents, and Des Moines Higher Education Center
2 17 Board of Directors, and participating on a national
2 18 level with various educational organizations; and
2 19 WHEREAS, President Koob has garnered numerous
2 20 personal awards, including the 2002 Cedar Valley
2 21 Business Hall of Fame award, the 2003 Cedar Falls
2 22 Representative Citizen of the Year award, and, in
2 23 2004, the Benjamin Franklin Award from the Eastern
2 24 Iowa Chapter of the Association of Fundraising
2 25 Professionals for outstanding charitable service; and
2 26 WHEREAS, President Koob has led with the core value
2 27 of quality as his touchstone and has placed a high
2 28 priority on the quality of the learning environment
2 29 for students, working collaboratively with students
2 30 and the entire campus community to continuously
3 1 improve the university and its relationships with all
3 2 sectors of education; and
3 3 WHEREAS, after four decades of public service and a
3 4 dedication to excellence, President Koob announced his
3 5 intention to retire from the presidency at the end of
3 6 the 2005=2006 academic year; NOW THEREFORE,
3 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
3 8 That the House of Representatives honors University of
3 9 Northern Iowa's President Robert Koob for a lifetime
3 10 of service and remarkable achievements and for his
3 11 tenure as President of the University of Northern
3 12 Iowa, where he guided his alma mater into the 21st
3 13 century; and
3 14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, an
3 15 official copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3 16 presentation to President Koob.
