  1  3 A Resolution honoring Coach Robert Hilmer, the "winningest"
  1  4    coach in the history of Iowa boys' high school basketball.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Robert Hilmer was born in Mt. Pleasant,
  1  6 Iowa, and grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa; and
  1  7    WHEREAS, Mr. Hilmer graduated from Cornell College
  1  8 in Mt. Vernon, where he taught in the community high
  1  9 school and began his coaching career as the boys'
  1 10 assistant basketball coach; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, Coach Hilmer took his first head coaching
  1 12 position at Fredericksburg, where in four years he
  1 13 achieved a record of 56 wins and 25 losses, then was
  1 14 the head coach at Forest City for 34 years, with a
  1 15 record of 534 wins and 187 losses; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, capping a four=decade career, in January
  1 17 2006 Coach Hilmer, as the coach at WACO of Wayland,
  1 18 became the winningest coach in Iowa boys' basketball
  1 19 history when the WACO Warriors defeated the Pekin
  1 20 Panthers; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, in the 2005=2006 season, the Warriors went
  1 22 on to place fourth in the class 1=A division at the
  1 23 2006 Iowa Boys' State Basketball Tournament and to win
  1 24 the class 1=A Sportsmanship Trophy; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, team member Travis Temple was named to the
  1 26 Des Moines Register's Boys' All=State Basketball First
  1 27 Team and team member Ryan Shelman was named to the
  1 28 Register's All=State Third Team and to the All=
  1 29 Tournament Team; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, Coach Hilmer now holds a career record of
  2  1 691 wins and 234 losses and a state championship in 43
  2  2 years of coaching; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, the National Federation of State High
  2  4 Schools Associations' Coaches Association named Coach
  2  5 Hilmer the 2005 National Coach of the Year for boys
  2  6 basketball, an award which is granted for a cumulative
  2  7 career of accomplishments, not just those
  2  8 accomplishments which take place on the court; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, in honor of this achievement, WACO High
  2 10 School has named its basketball court the "Bob Hilmer
  2 11 Court"; and
  2 12    WHEREAS, Coach Hilmer brings more than just
  2 13 coaching experience to the game of basketball; he
  2 14 brings integrity, and it is to that integrity that his
  2 15 players respond; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 16    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 17 That the House of Representatives honors Coach Robert
  2 18 Hilmer as Iowa's "winningest" boys' basketball coach
  2 19 and thanks him for his devotion to the game of
  2 20 basketball, to his student=athletes, and to public
  2 21 education in Iowa; and
  2 22    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon adoption an
  2 23 official copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  2 24 presentation to Coach Hilmer.
