1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY KUHN
1 3 A Resolution honoring the City of Stacyville on its
1 4 sesquicentennial year.
1 5 WHEREAS, in 1851 the Sioux tribe signed over the
1 6 area that would become Stacyville to the United States
1 7 government pursuant to the last treaty in which Native
1 8 Americans surrendered what would become Iowa soil to
1 9 the United States; and
1 10 WHEREAS, the Dakota, Sioux, Sauk, and Fox tribes
1 11 camped along the Cedar River near the early Stacyville
1 12 settlers; and
1 13 WHEREAS, by 1855 the state of Iowa was only nine
1 14 years old and hardy entrepreneurs from McHenry,
1 15 Illinois, were looking westward toward opportunities
1 16 in the northern part of Iowa; and
1 17 WHEREAS, in that same year Adam Blake and Nicholas
1 18 Hemann arrived in the area that became Stacyville,
1 19 laying the foundation for a community that has
1 20 survived 150 years; and
1 21 WHEREAS, Stacyville Township was formed in 1856 and
1 22 in February of that year Homer and Amelia (Donaldson)
1 23 Stacy, with their family, built a house and store and
1 24 platted the village of Stacyville; and
1 25 WHEREAS, by August 1856 a post office and sawmill
1 26 had been established and by 1857 there were over 20
1 27 frame buildings in the village; and
1 28 WHEREAS, when the Stacy family donated a plot of
1 29 land to be used as a park, the settlers decided to
1 30 name the town after them; and
2 1 WHEREAS, a school district was organized and the
2 2 first schoolhouse was completed by fall of 1856, with
2 3 a public high school built in 1867 and a Catholic
2 4 school building completed in 1877; and
2 5 WHEREAS, there were three Christian denominations
2 6 active in Stacyville in the latter half of the
2 7 nineteenth century: Catholic, Congregationalist, and
2 8 Methodist; and
2 9 WHEREAS, in 1893 Henry W. Schultz's catalogue
2 10 business preceded the Sears & Roebuck catalogue; and
2 11 WHEREAS, Stacyville provided homes for children who
2 12 rode the orphan trains between 1853 and the early
2 13 1900s; and
2 14 WHEREAS, Stacyville's newspapers have included The
2 15 Stacyville Sentinel, The Herald, The Stacyville
2 16 Monitor, and The Monitor Review; and
2 17 WHEREAS, after most of the east side of the
2 18 business district on Broad Street was destroyed by a
2 19 fire in 1935, the town pulled together to rebuild and
2 20 survive; and
2 21 WHEREAS, in the beginning, agriculture predominated
2 22 in the Stacyville area and 4=H is still strong today;
2 23 and
2 24 WHEREAS, Stacyville, located along the Little Cedar
2 25 River in northeast Iowa, will officially celebrate its
2 26 150th year of German heritage on July 28, 29, and 30,
2 27 2006, during its annual Bratwurst Daze, with this
2 28 year's motto: "We're looking back, but moving
2 29 forward."; NOW THEREFORE,
2 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
3 1 That the House of Representatives recognizes and
3 2 extends its congratulations to the City of Stacyville
3 3 on its sesquicentennial and for its 150 years of
3 4 service to its citizens and to the State of Iowa; and
3 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
3 6 this Resolution be prepared and presented to mayor
3 7 Harold Isaac on behalf of the City of Stacyville.
