  1  3              HUNTER, McCARTHY, and FALLON
  1  4 A Resolution honoring the Des Moines Roosevelt High
  1  5    School Girls' Basketball Team.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the Des Moines Roosevelt High School
  1  7 Girls' Basketball Team, the "Roughriders", completed
  1  8 the 2005=2006 season with a record of 17 wins and four
  1  9 losses and a postseason record of five wins and no
  1 10 losses, for a final record of 22 wins and four losses;
  1 11 and
  1 12    WHEREAS, the Roosevelt Roughriders were ranked
  1 13 fifth in the class 4=A division by the Iowa Girls High
  1 14 School Athletic Union; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, on Saturday, March 11, 2006, in front of
  1 16 almost 12,000 fans at Wells Fargo Arena, the Roosevelt
  1 17 Roughriders won the class 4=A championship at the 2006
  1 18 Iowa Girls' State Basketball Tournament; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, that championship was clinched with a
  1 20 victory over Cedar Rapids Washington; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, the Roosevelt Roughriders girls' state
  1 22 championship is the first for a Des Moines school
  1 23 since 1979, when an East High School team won a six=
  1 24 player title in Veterans Memorial Auditorium; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, Roughrider Charmaine Bell, a junior
  1 26 forward who scored 15 points in the championship game
  1 27 and was tournament leader in both points and assists,
  1 28 was named captain of the all=tournament team and was
  1 29 chosen for the Des Moines Register's Girls' Class 4=A
  1 30 All=State Basketball Team; and
  2  1    WHEREAS, MyKenya Johnson, scoring a game=high 18
  2  2 points, was also named to the all=tournament team; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, both the freshman and junior varsity teams
  2  4 contributed to this victory, assisting in practices
  2  5 and providing material and emotional support to their
  2  6 varsity teammates; and
  2  7    WHEREAS, the Roosevelt community was also honored,
  2  8 as principal Anita Micich accepted the class 4=A
  2  9 sportsmanship award; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 10    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 11 That the House of Representatives congratulates the
  2 12 members of the Des Moines Roosevelt High School Girls'
  2 13 Basketball Team:  Steph Fleckenstein, Emily Warford,
  2 14 Whitney Brewer, Charmaine Bell, Leigh Hotchkiss, Sacha
  2 15 Tyson, Ashley Tindrell, Samantha Tapscott, Megan
  2 16 Pederson, Quinnetta Claytor, Taylor Gray, Emma Van
  2 17 Winkle, Morgan Hamner, and MyKenya Johnson; their
  2 18 coach, Tig Johnson; assistant coaches, James McNear,
  2 19 Shawn McCurtain, Kevin Reed, and Mike Anderson; and
  2 20 the team managers, Megan Ashley and Peri Baldwin, for
  2 21 winning the class 4=A championship at the 2006 Iowa
  2 22 Girls' State Basketball Tournament and for the honor
  2 23 they have brought to their school and the residents of
  2 24 Des Moines; and
  2 25    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, an
  2 26 official copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  2 27 presentation to Coach Johnson and the members of the
  2 28 Roosevelt Roughriders High School Girls' Basketball
  2 29 Team.
