  1 20 A Resolution to welcome the 2006 Special Olympics USA
  1 21    National Games to Iowa.
  1 22    WHEREAS, the 2006 Special Olympics USA National
  1 23 Games, the first=ever United States national games,
  1 24 will be held July 2 through July 7, 2006, at Iowa
  1 25 State University in Ames, Iowa; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, this major sports event will bring 3,000
  1 27 Special Olympics athletes from across the United
  1 28 States, 2,000 coaches and official delegates, 10,000
  1 29 family members and friends, 8,000 volunteers, and
  1 30 30,000 spectators; and
  2  1    WHEREAS, the festivities begin July 2, 2006, with
  2  2 the opening ceremonies to be held in Hilton Coliseum,
  2  3 including star=studded entertainment, the Parade of
  2  4 Athletes, and the lighting of the torch; and
  2  5    WHEREAS, a list of events for the 2006 USA National
  2  6 Games includes aquatics, basketball, bocce, bowling,
  2  7 golf, gymnastics, power=lifting, soccer, softball,
  2  8 tennis, track and field, volleyball, and a motor
  2  9 activity training program; and
  2 10    WHEREAS, major sponsors and area businesses will
  2 11 host the "festival village", where attendees can
  2 12 gather information and participate in a variety of
  2 13 activities; and
  2 14    WHEREAS, Iowa has long shown its commitment to the
  2 15 Special Olympics, first by the ongoing and unstinting
  2 16 support of Iowans and Iowa businesses and also by
  2 17 legislative appropriations of over $1,000,000; NOW
  2 18 THEREFORE,
  2 19    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 20 That the House of Representatives takes great pleasure
  2 21 in welcoming the 2006 Special Olympics USA National
  2 22 Games to the campus of Iowa State University in Ames,
  2 23 Iowa; and
  2 24    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of
  2 25 Representatives offers its thanks to those people and
  2 26 organizations that have donated their time, money, and
  2 27 energies toward bringing the first=ever United States
  2 28 national games to Iowa.
