  1  3 A Resolution designating a Technology and Science Day
  1  4    in Iowa.
  1  5    WHEREAS, in the 21st century, growth and
  1  6 development in Iowa will increasingly depend on a
  1  7 technologically sophisticated workforce; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, information technology is a highly
  1  9 innovative industry in Iowa that is increasingly
  1 10 becoming the backbone of commerce, as scientists,
  1 11 engineers, and programmers develop new, faster, and
  1 12 more proficient methods of transferring and processing
  1 13 data and have become driving forces for promoting
  1 14 growth in Iowa's economy; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, information technology is an important
  1 16 sector for Iowa's economic future, providing well=
  1 17 paying jobs and the fundamental technological
  1 18 underpinning for advancement in a broad range of other
  1 19 sectors, from finance and insurance to manufacturing
  1 20 and the biosciences; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, Iowa's information technology sector shows
  1 22 significant promise for growth and has proven itself
  1 23 to be more robust than the national information
  1 24 technology sector in weathering downturns and
  1 25 challenges; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, a thriving technology sector relies on a
  1 27 skilled and productive workforce, and the availability
  1 28 of human capital will be a key factor in the success
  1 29 of the industry; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, future demand for computer specialists and
  2  1 engineers in Iowa will far outstrip supply, and
  2  2 production will move where these professionals are
  2  3 located; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, interest among students in becoming
  2  5 scientists or engineers has steadily declined, and the
  2  6 proportion of college students earning science and
  2  7 engineering degrees in the United States is lower than
  2  8 in almost all of its major trading partners; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, Iowa's middle and high school students
  2 10 will comprise the bulk of the future workforce and
  2 11 must be highly educated in the areas of science and
  2 12 technology, and aware of career opportunities in those
  2 13 areas; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 14    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 15 That the House of Representatives declares Friday, May
  2 16 19, 2006, as Technology and Science Day in Iowa and
  2 17 urges all schools, educators, and guidance counselors
  2 18 to use this day to offer a competition, activity, or
  2 19 initiative to build student awareness and interest in
  2 20 science and technology and in the varied careers these
  2 21 fields offer students who will be tomorrow's workforce
  2 22 leaders.
