  1  3 A Resolution recognizing the Iowa premiere of Disney's The
  1  4    Lion King at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines.
  1  5    WHEREAS, the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, a
  1  6 nonprofit performing arts center, has served the
  1  7 people of Iowa for more than 25 years, engaging some 6
  1  8 million patrons in world=class entertainment,
  1  9 education, and cultural activities since 1979; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, on Friday, March 3, 2006, the Civic Center
  1 11 welcomed its most historic production yet to Des
  1 12 Moines, Disney's The Lion King, making its Iowa
  1 13 premiere as part of the Civic Center's 2005=2006 Betts
  1 14 Broadway Series; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, this theatrical epic, winner of six Tony
  1 16 Awards in 1998, will become the longest=running
  1 17 Broadway production in Iowa history with a record six=
  1 18 week run of 45 performances from March 3 through April
  1 19 9, 2006; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Disney's The Lion King will play to a
  1 21 record audience of 120,000 across its entire run,
  1 22 drawing visitors from every corner of Iowa and from
  1 23 throughout the Midwest to Des Moines, creating an
  1 24 economic impact in the millions of dollars; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, Des Moines represents the second=smallest
  1 26 market in the world to host the show, and is currently
  1 27 one of just eight places on the globe to see Disney's
  1 28 The Lion King; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 29    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  1 30 That the House of Representatives congratulates the
  2  1 Civic Center of Greater Des Moines on making Iowa
  2  2 theatrical history and welcomes the cast and crew of
  2  3 Disney's The Lion King to Iowa and their new home in
  2  4 Des Moines; and
  2  5    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, an
  2  6 official copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  2  7 presentation to the Civic Center President and Chief
  2  8 Executive Officer Jeff Chelesvig, staff members, and
  2  9 the touring company of Disney's The Lion King.
