  1  2                        BY  BERRY
  1  3 A Resolution designating January 2007 as mentoring
  1  4    month in Iowa.
  1  5    WHEREAS, mentors serve as role models, advocates,
  1  6 friends, and advisors to youth in need; and
  1  7    WHEREAS, mentoring is a proven, effective strategy
  1  8 to enable caring, responsible adults to provide
  1  9 guidance and build confidence, stability, and
  1 10 direction for individual children; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, in Iowa, 46 percent of mentored teens are
  1 12 less likely to use drugs, 59 percent get better
  1 13 grades, and 73 percent strive for higher goals; and
  1 14    WHEREAS, research demonstrates that mentoring has a
  1 15 positive impact on students by increasing attendance
  1 16 at school, improving rates of high school graduation
  1 17 and college attendance, and reducing involvement with
  1 18 drugs, alcohol, and violent behavior; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, the establishment of January as mentoring
  1 20 month in Iowa will emphasize the importance of
  1 21 mentoring and pay tribute to the many Iowans and
  1 22 Americans already involved in mentoring; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, the month=long celebration of mentoring
  1 24 will encourage more organizations, such as schools,
  1 25 businesses, faith communities, and individuals to
  1 26 support community service by getting involved in
  1 27 mentoring; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, celebrations of mentoring would encourage
  1 29 more individuals to volunteer as mentors and help
  1 30 close the mentoring gap; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  1    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2  2 That the House of Representatives designates January
  2  3 2007 as mentoring month in Iowa, and urges all Iowa
  2  4 schools, businesses, faith communities, and individual
  2  5 Iowans to become mentors and guides to Iowa's youth.
