  1  9 A Resolution to recognize February 6, 2006 as Ronald Reagan
  1 10    Day.
  1 11    WHEREAS, President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of
  1 12 humble background, worked throughout his life serving
  1 13 freedom and advancing the public good, having been
  1 14 employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate
  1 15 spokesman, Governor of California, and President of
  1 16 the United States; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, in the 1930s, Ronald Reagan began his
  1 18 professional life as a sports broadcaster in
  1 19 Davenport, Iowa, and later at Des Moines station WHO,
  1 20 where he provided "play=by=play" commentary for
  1 21 Chicago Cubs baseball games; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, Ronald Reagan served with honor and
  1 23 distinction for two terms as the 40th President of the
  1 24 United States, winning his second term by earning the
  1 25 confidence of three=fifths of the electorate and
  1 26 carrying 49 of the 50 states in the general election
  1 27 == a record unsurpassed in the history of American
  1 28 presidential elections; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, in 1981, when Ronald Reagan was
  1 30 inaugurated President, he inherited a disillusioned
  2  1 nation shackled by rampant inflation and high
  2  2 unemployment; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, during Mr. Reagan's presidency he worked
  2  4 in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of
  2  5 restoring accountability and common sense to
  2  6 government which led to an unprecedented economic
  2  7 expansion and opportunity for millions of Americans;
  2  8 and
  2  9    WHEREAS, Mr. Reagan's commitment to an active
  2 10 social policy agenda for the nation's children helped
  2 11 lower crime and drug use; and
  2 12    WHEREAS, President Reagan's commitment to the armed
  2 13 forces contributed to the restoration of pride in
  2 14 America, her values and those cherished by the free
  2 15 world, and prepared America's Armed Forces to win the
  2 16 Gulf War; and
  2 17    WHEREAS, President Reagan's vision of "peace
  2 18 through strength" led to the end of the Cold War and
  2 19 the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing
  2 20 basic human rights for millions of people; and
  2 21    WHEREAS, February 6, 2006, was the 95th anniversary
  2 22 of Ronald Reagan's birth, and the second since his
  2 23 death; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 24    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 25 That the House of Representatives recognizes and
  2 26 observes the anniversary of President Reagan's birth
  2 27 and urges all Iowans to take cognizance of the
  2 28 anniversary and to participate fittingly in its
  2 29 observance.
