1 An Act relating to the maximum gross weight limit for vehicles
2 hauling crops during the annual period of harvest.
3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 1 Section 1. Section 321.463, subsection 5, Code 2005, is
1 2 amended by adding the following new paragraph:
1 3 NEW PARAGRAPH. f. Notwithstanding paragraph "b", during
1 4 the period beginning October 1 and ending November 30, the
1 5 maximum gross weight allowed to be carried on a vehicle
1 6 hauling crops, including corn, soybeans, hay, straw, and
1 7 stover, on noninterstate highways from the point of harvest to
1 8 a storage or distribution point is ninety thousand pounds.
1 9 However, weight embargoes on bridges shall continue to apply.
1 10 EXPLANATION
1 11 This bill creates an exception to maximum gross weight
1 12 limits for vehicles hauling crops on noninterstate highways
1 13 from the point of harvest to a distribution or storage point
1 14 during the period of harvest from October 1 through November
1 15 30 annually. Current law establishes graduated weight limits
1 16 for vehicles or combinations of vehicles based on the number
1 17 of axles, with a maximum allowable gross weight of 80,000
1 18 pounds. The bill allows a maximum gross weight of 90,000
1 19 pounds, regardless of the number of axles, during the harvest
1 20 period.
1 21 Weight limitations on bridges are not affected by the bill.
