2 schedule for secondary public schools.

1 1 Section 1. Section 256F.4, subsection 5, Code 2005, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 5. A charter school shall provide instruction for at least
1 4 the number of days required by section 279.10, subsection 1,
1 5 or shall provide at least the equivalent number of total
1 6 hours. A charter school shall use the statewide secondary
1 7 school bell schedule as provided in section 279.63.
1 8 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 279.63 COMMON SECONDARY SCHOOL BELL
1 9 SCHEDULE.
1 10 1. The boards of directors of the area education agencies
1 11 shall, in consultation with the school districts located
1 12 within agency boundaries, determine through unanimous
1 13 agreement of all of the area education agencies, a statewide
1 14 school bell schedule for the following school year for
1 15 secondary schools.
1 16 2. The area education agencies shall submit to the
1 17 department of education, not later than November 1 of the
1 18 preceding school year, the statewide secondary school bell
1 19 schedule determined for the following school year pursuant to
1 20 subsection 1. The department of education shall post the
1 21 statewide secondary school bell schedule on its internet
1 22 website not later than December 1 of the preceding school
1 23 year.
1 24 3. The board of directors of each school district shall
1 25 use the statewide secondary school bell schedule determined
1 26 pursuant to subsection 1.
1 27 4. For purposes of this section, "bell schedule" means the
1 28 start and end of class times for schools.
1 29 EXPLANATION
1 30 This bill requires the area education agencies, in
1 31 consultation with school districts, to determine annually,
1 32 through unanimous agreement of all of the agencies, a
1 33 statewide school bell schedule for the following school year
1 34 for secondary schools, and requires all school districts and
1 35 charter schools to use the bell schedule established by the
2 1 area education agencies. The department of education is
2 2 directed to post the bell schedule on its internet website.
