  1  1    Section 1.  EDUCATIONAL SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER STUDY.
  1  2 The department of education shall conduct a study of school
  1  3 district and area education agency salary and compensation
  1  4 schedules for persons who have met the training, assessment,
  1  5 and certification requirements to become educational sign
  1  6 language interpreters and who provide interpretation services
  1  7 as a professional member of a public school or area education
  1  8 agency staff.  The study shall include a review of the
  1  9 compensation paid to sign language interpreters who are
  1 10 similarly trained and certified and who provide services in
  1 11 the Iowa judicial branch and in school districts in
  1 12 neighboring states.  The department shall submit its findings
  1 13 and recommendations in a report to the chairpersons and
  1 14 ranking members of the general assembly's committees on
  1 15 education and the chairpersons and ranking members of the
  1 16 joint appropriations subcommittee on education by January 15,
  1 17 2007.  The department shall also publish the report on its
  1 18 website not later than January 15, 2007.
  1 19                           EXPLANATION
  1 20    This bill directs the department of education to conduct a
  1 21 study of school district and area education agency salary and
  1 22 compensation schedules for persons who are educational sign
  1 23 language interpreters who provide interpretation services as a
  1 24 professional member of a public school or area education
  1 25 agency staff.  The study shall include a review of the salary
  1 26 and compensation schedules for sign language interpreters who
  1 27 are similarly trained and certified and who provide services
  1 28 in the Iowa judicial branch and in school districts in
  1 29 neighboring states.  The department shall submit its findings
  1 30 and recommendations in a report to the chairperson and ranking
  1 31 member of the house and senate education committees and the
  1 32 chairperson and ranking member of the joint subcommittee on
  1 33 education appropriations by January 15, 2007.  The department
  1 34 shall also publish the report on its website not later than
  1 35 January 15, 2007.
