1 An Act relating to the number of eligible electors' signatures
2 necessary in a school district to propose at a regular
3 election the question of providing free textbooks for the use
4 of the school district's pupils.

1 1 Section 1. Section 301.24, Code 2005, is amended to read
1 2 as follows:
1 3 301.24 PETITION == ELECTION.
1 4 Whenever a petition signed by one hundred eligible electors
1 5 residing in the school district or a number of eligible
1 6 electors residing in the school district equal in number to at
1 7 least ten percent of the registered number of voters in the
1 8 last preceding regular school district, to be determined by
1 9 the school board of any school district, shall be election,
1 10 whichever is greater, is filed with the secretary thirty days
1 11 or more before the regular election, asking that the question
1 12 of providing free textbooks for the use of pupils in the
1 13 public schools thereof school district's attendance centers be
1 14 submitted to the voters at the next regular election, the
1 15 secretary shall cause notice of such proposition to be given
1 16 in the notice of such election.
1 17 EXPLANATION
1 18 This bill provides that a petition asking that the question
1 19 of providing free textbooks to a school district's pupils be
1 20 submitted to the voters at the next regular election must be
1 21 signed by the greater of 100 eligible electors residing in the
1 22 school district or a number of eligible electors equal to 10
1 23 percent of the number of voters in the last preceding regular
1 24 school election. The Code currently requires the signatures
1 25 of at least 10 percent of the registered voters in the school
1 26 district on such a petition.
