Senate Resolution 23 PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY VEENSTRA, PUTNEY, GASKILL, BOETTGER, SIEVERS, 1 3 KRAMER, IVERSON, JOHNSON, SCHUERER, REHBERG, HOSCH, 1 4 McKINLEY, BEHN, ANGELO, KETTERING, WIECK, SEYMOUR, 1 5 TINSMAN, DRAKE, QUIRMBACH, BEALL, RAGAN, SENG, 1 6 HORN, STEWART, DEARDEN, COURTNEY, KIBBIE, BLACK, 1 7 McCOY, CONNOLLY, DVORSKY, DOTZLER, BOLKCOM, HATCH, 1 8 WARNSTADT, GRONSTAL, HOLVECK, KREIMAN, and FRAISE 1 9 A Resolution honoring the Iowa State University of 1 10 Science and Technology Extension for 100 years of 1 11 service to Iowa. 1 12 WHEREAS, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension 1 13 began at the request of the people of Iowa, when in 1 14 1903, Sioux County farmers from Hull, Iowa, cooperated 1 15 with the university to bring the land=grant college's 1 16 programs and services to the people of this state; and 1 17 WHEREAS, ISU Extension became the model for 1 18 cooperative extension work that was adopted nationwide 1 19 in 1914 with the passing of the federal Smith=Lever 1 20 Act; and 1 21 WHEREAS, ISU Extension partners with Iowans, 1 22 including 900 locally elected Extension Council 1 23 members, to provide research=based learning 1 24 opportunities to improve quality of life in Iowa; and 1 25 WHEREAS, ISU Extension embraces the university's 1 26 strategic goals of learning, discovery, and 1 27 engagement, and, through an active partnership and 1 28 presence in every county, provides Iowans with access 1 29 to the resources of the university and communicates 1 30 the priorities of the citizens to the university; and 2 1 WHEREAS, in 2002, more than 665,000 clients had 2 2 individual contact with extension programs, the 2 3 extension distributed more than two million 2 4 publications in hard copy and three million copies 2 5 digitally, and extension information was accessed from 2 6 extension web sites approximately 20 million times, 2 7 evidence that ISU Extension is well=positioned to 2 8 support the growth and development of Iowa in the 2 9 knowledge=based economy and society of the 21st 2 10 century; and 2 11 WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, Iowa State 2 12 University has been helping Iowans become their best 2 13 and is ready and anxious to begin its next 100 years 2 14 of service to the state; NOW THEREFORE, 2 15 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 16 honors Iowa State University Extension for 100 years 2 17 of cooperative services and programs to Iowa and joins 2 18 in celebrating April 7, 2003, as the kickoff date for 2 19 Iowa State University Extension's inaugural 2 20 celebration of its creation 100 years ago. 2 21 LSB 3129SS 80 2 22 kh/sh/8
