Senate Resolution 132 PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY LUNDBY 1 3 A Resolution honoring the town of Palo and its surrounding 1 4 community on the town's sesquicentennial year. 1 5 WHEREAS, Palo is a small Eastern Iowa town first 1 6 settled by Mr. John Hollenbeck when Iowa was still a 1 7 territory, and later by Mr. John G. Cole who on June 1 8 10, 1854, had the site of the present town surveyed on 1 9 the northeast quarter of section 29, of Fayette 1 10 Township 84 north, range 8; and 1 11 WHEREAS, Palo and its surrounding community is the 1 12 site of a number of businesses and homes, with a 1 13 thriving religious congregation and a religious 1 14 tradition which traces its origins to the town's 1 15 founders and to a church erected in 1870, which 1 16 continues to stand as a reminder of the town's 1 17 history; and 1 18 WHEREAS, the most prominent landmark of Palo and 1 19 its surrounding community is the Duane Arnold Energy 1 20 Center, which became operational in 1974, produces 1 21 approximately 13 percent of the state's electricity, 1 22 and employs more than 500 hardworking and well=trained 1 23 people, many of whom live in or near the Palo 1 24 community; and 1 25 WHEREAS, another significant feature of Palo and 1 26 its surrounding community is the 410=acre lake at 1 27 Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area and 1,517 acres 1 28 of land around the lake which provides wide=ranging 1 29 recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts 1 30 including ice fishing, scuba diving, swimming, 2 1 camping, picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, 2 2 hunting, bird=watching, snowmobile riding, and cross= 2 3 country skiing; and 2 4 WHEREAS, on June 12, 2004, Palo and its surrounding 2 5 community will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the 2 6 town's founding, featuring a variety of entertainment 2 7 including a parade, garden tractor pull, dance, and 2 8 fireworks; NOW THEREFORE, 2 9 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate 2 10 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the town 2 11 of Palo and its surrounding community on the town's 2 12 sesquicentennial anniversary year and for its 150 2 13 years of service to its citizens and to the State of 2 14 Iowa; and 2 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of 2 16 this Resolution be prepared and presented to Mayor 2 17 Larry Dauenbaugh, Mr. John Huntington, and Ms. Ruth 2 18 Kibbie, citizens of the town of Palo and its 2 19 surrounding community. 2 20 LSB 5958SS 80 2 21 da/sh/8
