COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN == STUDY == 1 2 MALE ISSUES. 1 3 1. The commission on the status of women shall conduct a 1 4 study of issues generally affecting men and submit a report to 1 5 the general assembly by January 1, 2004, with its findings and 1 6 recommendations. The commission shall establish a planning 1 7 group with members that have particular experience or training 1 8 in issues affecting men to conduct the study. 1 9 2. In conducting the study, the planning group shall 1 10 examine, at a minimum, the following issues: 1 11 a. Establishment of a separate commission dedicated to 1 12 issues concerning men. 1 13 b. Examine gender=specific self=esteem, stereotyping, and 1 14 cultural bias issues that may uniquely affect men and boys. 1 15 c. Establishment of all=male mathematics and science 1 16 classes. 1 17 d. Career skills development and continuing education 1 18 programs to promote productive and responsible citizens. 1 19 e. Expanded programs to address the responsibility and 1 20 joys of marriage, faithfulness to spouse, communication 1 21 skills, responsibility to children financially and 1 22 emotionally, and joint management of the home. 1 23 f. Addressing unique health problems of men including 1 24 cancer, heart disease, and alcohol problems that often lead to 1 25 severe depression and suicide. 1 26 EXPLANATION 1 27 This bill provides that the commission on the status of 1 28 women shall conduct a study of issues affecting men and submit 1 29 a report to the general assembly by January 1, 2004, with its 1 30 findings and recommendations. The bill provides that the 1 31 commission shall establish a planning group to conduct the 1 32 study whose members shall have experience and training in 1 33 issues affecting men. In conducting the study, the group 1 34 shall examine issues related to establishing a separate 1 35 commission on issues concerning men, gender=specific cultural 2 1 biases, male mathematics and science classes, career skills 2 2 development, marital issues, and health issues. 2 3 LSB 2667SV 80 2 4 ec/pj/5
