  1  1    Section 1.  Section 149.5, Code 2003, is amended to read as
  1  2 follows:
  1  3    149.5  AMPUTATIONS == GENERAL ANESTHETICS ANESTHESIA.
  1  4    A license to practice podiatry shall not authorize the
  1  5 licensee to amputate the human foot or use any anesthetics
  1  6 other than local.
  1  7    A licensed podiatric physician may administer local
  1  8 anesthesia.  Conscious sedation may be administered by a
  1  9 licensed podiatric physician in a hospital or an ambulatory
  1 10 surgical center.
  1 11    A licensed podiatric physician may prescribe and administer
  1 12 drugs for the treatment of human foot ailments as provided in
  1 13 section 149.1.
  1 14                           EXPLANATION
  1 15    This bill relates to the administration of anesthesia by a
  1 16 podiatrist.  Currently, Code section 149.5 provides that a
  1 17 podiatrist shall not be authorized to utilize any anesthetics
  1 18 other than local anesthetics.  The bill continues to authorize
  1 19 the administration of local anesthesia by a licensed podiatric
  1 20 physician and provides that conscious sedation may be
  1 21 administered by a licensed podiatric physician in a hospital
  1 22 or an ambulatory surgical center.
