1 An Act requiring special training for reserve peace officers who
2 engage in motor vehicle chases.

1 1 Section 1. Section 80D.3, subsection 1, Code 2003, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 1. Each person appointed to serve as a reserve peace
1 4 officer shall satisfactorily complete a minimum training
1 5 course as provided in this section.
1 6 a. In addition, if If a reserve peace officer is
1 7 authorized to carry weapons, the officer shall satisfactorily
1 8 complete the same training course in the use of weapons as is
1 9 required for basic training of regular peace officers by the
1 10 Iowa law enforcement academy.
1 11 b. If a reserve peace officer is authorized to engage in a
1 12 chase utilizing a motor vehicle, the officer shall
1 13 satisfactorily complete a training course in that area either
1 14 sponsored or approved by the Iowa law enforcement academy.
1 15 c. The minimum training course for reserve peace officers
1 16 must be satisfactorily completed within four years from the
1 17 date of appointment. If reserve officer training received
1 18 before July 1, 1990, meets the requirements of this section,
1 19 the training may be applied to meet the minimum training
1 20 course requirements of this section.
1 21 EXPLANATION
1 22 This bill requires that a reserve peace officer who may
1 23 engage in a chase involving a motor vehicle obtain special
1 24 training in that area.
