CARBONATED BEVERAGE SALES IN SCHOOLS == STUDY. 1 2 The department of education shall conduct a study concerning 1 3 the sale of carbonated beverages to students in schools during 1 4 the 2002=2003 school year. The department shall require 1 5 school boards, or persons under the supervision of school 1 6 boards, to provide information to the department in records or 1 7 reports required by section 283A.5 with respect to school 1 8 breakfast and lunch programs. The information to be provided 1 9 shall include the number of elementary, middle, and high 1 10 schools within each school district that sell carbonated 1 11 beverages to students, the method by which the carbonated 1 12 beverages are sold, the number of locations within each school 1 13 where the sales are made, the amount of carbonated beverages 1 14 sold on a per=pupil basis, and the gross sales amount of such 1 15 carbonated beverages. The information shall not include sales 1 16 of carbonated beverages at extracurricular events. 1 17 On or before January 15, 2004, the department of education 1 18 shall file a report with the general assembly that contains 1 19 its findings and recommendations, including any proposals to 1 20 change or limit the sale of carbonated beverages in schools. 1 21 EXPLANATION 1 22 This bill requires the department of education to conduct a 1 23 study concerning the sale of carbonated beverages to students 1 24 in schools during the 2002=2003 school year. The department 1 25 shall require school boards to submit to it information about 1 26 the type and number of schools in each district that sell 1 27 carbonated beverages, the method by which the beverages are 1 28 sold, the number of locations within each school where the 1 29 sales are made to students, the amount of such beverages sold 1 30 on a per=pupil basis, and the gross sales amount of such 1 31 beverages in each school district.
