  1  1          SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                  BY  KIBBIE and DRAKE
  1  3 A Resolution requesting the establishment of standing
  1  4    Senate and House subcommittees on veterans affairs.
  1  5    WHEREAS, approximately 280,000 veterans reside in
  1  6 the State of Iowa; and
  1  7    WHEREAS, important public policy issues relating to
  1  8 veterans are often considered and acted upon by state
  1  9 legislatures; and
  1 10    WHEREAS, the current procedures require that the
  1 11 Iowa veterans council and the commission of veterans
  1 12 affairs, in cooperation with one another, present
  1 13 veterans' issues to legislative committees which are
  1 14 often unfamiliar with the specific problems and needs
  1 15 of Iowa veterans; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, 30 other states have established
  1 17 legislative committees to address public policy issues
  1 18 relating to veterans; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 19    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  1 20 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That, to facilitate
  1 21 consideration of public policy issues relating to
  1 22 Iowa's veterans, the chairpersons of the Senate and
  1 23 House standing committees on State Government are
  1 24 requested to establish standing subcommittees on
  1 25 veterans affairs and to allow the subcommittees to
  1 26 meet jointly to review veterans issues.
  1 27    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Rules and
  1 28 Administration Committee of the Senate is requested to
  1 29 consider recommending to the Senate a change to the
  1 30 Senate Rules to provide for the establishment of a
  2  1 permanent Senate subcommittee on veterans affairs
  2  2 within the State Government standing committee.
