Senate Concurrent Resolution 12 PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY BLACK 1 3 A Concurrent Resolution supporting the United Nations' 1 4 recognition of the Republic of China on Taiwan. 1 5 WHEREAS, the Republic of China was a founding 1 6 member of the United Nations in 1945, and was 1 7 consistently faithful to the goals and objectives of 1 8 the United Nations for 26 years; and 1 9 WHEREAS, in 1971, the United Nations General 1 10 Assembly excluded the Republic of China in order to 1 11 recognize the mainland People's Republic of China; and 1 12 WHEREAS, the United Nations has allowed other 1 13 divided countries such as East and West Germany and 1 14 North and South Korea to be equal members of the 1 15 United Nations organization; and 1 16 WHEREAS, on August 6, 1993, seven Central American 1 17 countries presented an initiative to the Secretary 1 18 General of the United Nations, calling for the 1 19 Republic of China's readmission to the United Nations; 1 20 and 1 21 WHEREAS, readmission of the Republic of China would 1 22 be in keeping with the primary mission of the United 1 23 Nations of promoting international peace and security; 1 24 and 1 25 WHEREAS, the state of Iowa and several cities in 1 26 Iowa have established formal sister state and sister 1 27 city relationships with regions and cities in the 1 28 Republic of China; and 1 29 WHEREAS, the United States and Iowa are significant 1 30 trading partners as evidenced by the fact that the 2 1 Republic of China has purchased more than $16 billion 2 2 in American products this past year; NOW THEREFORE, 2 3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF 2 4 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General 2 5 Assembly supports the United Nations' recognition and 2 6 readmission of the Republic of China. 2 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this 2 8 resolution be transmitted to the United Nations 2 9 General Assembly and the Honorable George W.
