  1 An Act relating to the maximum gross weight limit for vehicles
  2    hauling crops during the annual period of harvest.

  1  1    Section 1.  Section 321.463, Code 2003, is amended by
  1  2 adding the following new subsection:
  1  3    NEW SUBSECTION.  5A.  Notwithstanding subsection 5,
  1  4 paragraph "b", during the period beginning September 1 and
  1  5 ending November 14, the maximum gross weight allowed to be
  1  6 carried on a vehicle hauling crops, including but not limited
  1  7 to corn, soybeans, hay, straw, and stover, on noninterstate
  1  8 highways from the point of harvest to a storage or
  1  9 distribution point is ninety thousand pounds.  However, weight
  1 10 embargoes on bridges shall continue to apply.
  1 11                           EXPLANATION
  1 12    This bill creates an exception to maximum gross weight
  1 13 limits for vehicles hauling crops on noninterstate highways
  1 14 from the point of harvest to a distribution or storage point
  1 15 during the period of harvest from September 1 through November
  1 16 14 annually.  Current law establishes graduated weight limits
  1 17 for motor vehicles based on the number of axles on a vehicle,
  1 18 with a maximum allowable weight of 80,000 pounds for the
  1 19 largest vehicles.  The bill allows a maximum vehicle weight of
  1 20 90,000 pounds during the harvest period.
  1 21    Weight limitations on bridges are not affected by the bill.
