House Resolution 51 PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY EICHHORN 1 3 A Resolution supporting the nomination of federal 1 4 court of appeals judicial nominee Miguel A. Estrada. 1 5 WHEREAS, on May 9, 2001, President George W. Bush 1 6 nominated Miguel A. Estrada to fill a vacancy on the 1 7 United States Court of Appeals for the District of 1 8 Columbia Circuit; and 1 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Estrada's credentials go uncontested; 1 10 upon his arrival to the United States as an immigrant 1 11 from Honduras, he mastered the English language and 1 12 embraced American culture, and graduated magna cum 1 13 laude from Columbia University and Harvard Law School; 1 14 and 1 15 WHEREAS, more than one and one=half years have 1 16 passed without a vote on the Senate floor regarding 1 17 Mr. Estrada's nomination; and 1 18 WHEREAS, the Senate Judiciary Committee has issued 1 19 a favorable report to the United States Senate, yet 1 20 because of partisan politics Democratic Senators 1 21 threaten to filibuster a Senate floor vote; and 1 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Estrada has received support from 1 23 liberal and conservative colleagues alike who attest 1 24 that he is one of the most brilliant and effective 1 25 appellate lawyers in the country; and 1 26 WHEREAS, organizations who support Mr. Estrada 1 27 include the League of United Latin American Citizens, 1 28 U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic National 1 29 Bar Association, Hispanic Business Roundtable, and the 1 30 Latino Coalition; and 2 1 WHEREAS, Mr. Estrada would be the first Hispanic in 2 2 the country to sit on the United States Court of 2 3 Appeals District of Columbia Circuit, an important and 2 4 prestigious position within the nation's Courts of 2 5 Appeals; NOW THEREFORE, 2 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 2 7 That the House of Representatives of the State of Iowa 2 8 requests that the United States Senate work to allow a 2 9 vote on the appointment of Mr. Estrada on the floor of 2 10 the United States Senate. 2 11 LSB 3399HH 80 2 12 jm/sh/8
