  1  7 A Resolution honoring the Iowa State University of
  1  8    Science and Technology Extension for 100 years of
  1  9    service to Iowa.
  1 10    WHEREAS, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension
  1 11 began at the request of the people of Iowa, when in
  1 12 1903, Sioux County farmers from Hull, Iowa, cooperated
  1 13 with the university to bring the land=grant college's
  1 14 programs and services to the people of this state; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, ISU Extension became the model for
  1 16 cooperative extension work that was adopted nationwide
  1 17 in 1914 with the passing of the federal Smith=Lever
  1 18 Act; and
  1 19    WHEREAS, ISU Extension partners with Iowans,
  1 20 including 900 locally elected Extension Council
  1 21 members, to provide research=based learning
  1 22 opportunities to improve quality of life in Iowa; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, ISU Extension embraces the university's
  1 24 strategic goals of learning, discovery, and
  1 25 engagement, and, through an active partnership and
  1 26 presence in every county, provides Iowans with access
  1 27 to the resources of the university and communicates
  1 28 the priorities of the citizens to the university; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, in 2002, more than 665,000 clients had
  1 30 individual contact with extension programs, the
  2  1 extension distributed more than two million
  2  2 publications in hard copy and three million copies
  2  3 digitally, and extension information was accessed from
  2  4 extension web sites approximately 20 million times,
  2  5 evidence that ISU Extension is well=positioned to
  2  6 support the growth and development of Iowa in the
  2  7 knowledge=based economy and society of the 21st
  2  8 century; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, Iowa State
  2 10 University has been helping Iowans become their best
  2 11 and is ready and anxious to begin its next 100 years
  2 12 of service to the state; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 13    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 14 That the House of Representatives honors Iowa State
  2 15 University Extension for 100 years of cooperative
  2 16 services and programs to Iowa and joins in celebrating
  2 17 April 7, 2003, as the kickoff date for Iowa State
  2 18 University Extension's inaugural celebration of its
  2 19 creation 100 years ago.
