House Resolution 158 PAG LIN 1 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY MERTZ 1 3 A Resolution honoring the city of Algona on its 1 4 sesquicentennial anniversary year. 1 5 WHEREAS, in 1851 the Third General Assembly of the 1 6 Iowa Legislature established Kossuth County, named in 1 7 honor of Lajos Kossuth; and 1 8 WHEREAS, in 1854 brothers Ambrose and Asa Call 1 9 first settled the rich farmground of Kossuth County, 1 10 near the beautiful Des Moines River; and 1 11 WHEREAS, in that year they were among the pioneers 1 12 who founded the town of Algona, named in part by Asa's 1 13 wife and in part for the Indian words "Algonquin 1 14 Waters"; and 1 15 WHEREAS, from that beginning Algona has grown into 1 16 a governmental, agricultural, and manufacturing center 1 17 of 6,000 residents, blending settlers of German, 1 18 Norwegian, Irish, and English ancestry into a single 1 19 community; and 1 20 WHEREAS, in World War II Algona played a major role 1 21 in the allied war effort by providing a detention camp 1 22 which housed, and provided care and comfort for 1 23 thousands of German prisoners of war; and 1 24 WHEREAS, even today Algona demonstrates that a good 1 25 life can be had in rural Iowa; NOW THEREFORE, 1 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, 1 27 That the House of Representatives recognizes and 1 28 extends its congratulations to the city of Algona on 1 29 its sesquicentennial anniversary to be celebrated July 1 30 10, 2004, and for its prominent place in Iowa history 2 1 and its role in Iowa's future. 2 2 LSB 7027YH 80 2 3 jr/gg/14
