  1  4   STEVENS, WENDT, FREVERT, GREIMANN, BELL, D. TAYLOR,
  1  5    SHOULTZ, WHITAKER, HOGG, COHOON, FALLON, STRUYK,
  1  6       GASKILL, SWAIM, HUSER, WINCKLER, and BUKTA
  1  7 A Resolution encouraging the President of the United
  1  8    States to take swift action to remove Rod Paige
  1  9    from the position of United States Secretary
  1 10    of Education.
  1 11    WHEREAS, the United States Secretary of Education
  1 12 is the leader for federal education policy issues; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, every State in the Union is in the middle
  1 14 of implementing one of the more far=reaching federal
  1 15 mandates designed to improve student achievement; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, the United States is a democracy that
  1 17 requires leadership to bring people with differing
  1 18 views together, rather than a government that works to
  1 19 divide its people; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige
  1 21 recently alienated millions of educators and 2.7
  1 22 million teachers in the National Education Association
  1 23 by making inappropriate comments during a private
  1 24 meeting with governors at the White House; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, efforts to change the federal policies
  1 26 that impact the education of children in our public
  1 27 schools should not be considered an act of terrorism;
  1 28 and
  1 29    WHEREAS, a number of Representatives and Senators
  1 30 of the Iowa General Assembly are members of the
  2  1 National Education Association and are loyal to the
  2  2 principles of America's representative democracy; and
  2  3    WHEREAS, Secretary Rod Paige's apology to the
  2  4 members of the National Education Association failed
  2  5 to repudiate the content of his inappropriate
  2  6 comments; and
  2  7    WHEREAS, Secretary Rod Paige has repeatedly made
  2  8 inaccurate and unfair statements about Iowa's
  2  9 implementation of federal law regarding education
  2 10 policy; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 11    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 12 That the President of the United States, George W.
  2 13 Bush, is urged to take swift action to remove Rod
  2 14 Paige from the position of United States Secretary of
  2 15 Education; and
  2 16    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Chief Clerk of the
  2 17 House of Representatives transmit copies of this
  2 18 Resolution to the President of the United States, and
  2 19 to the President of the United States Senate, the
  2 20 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives,
  2 21 the members of Iowa's congressional delegation, and
  2 22 the United States Secretary of Education, that they
  2 23 may be apprised of the sense of the Iowa House of
  2 24 Representatives in this matter.
