  1  1                HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                  BY  WENDT and WHITEAD
  1  3 A Resolution calling upon Congress to enact legislation
  1  4    to allow concurrent receipt of retirement and
  1  5    disability compensation by American veterans.
  1  6    WHEREAS, Americans who serve in our nation's armed
  1  7 forces should be honored for their service; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, service members who become disabled while
  1  9 serving our country or who retire having served our
  1 10 country are rightfully compensated; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, the compensation to service members who
  1 12 are eligible for retirement and also disabled is
  1 13 reduced by one dollar for every dollar of disability
  1 14 compensation received; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, American veterans are the only federal
  1 16 government retirees who are denied concurrent receipt
  1 17 of both retirement and disability compensation; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, legislation has been introduced in
  1 19 Congress with broad bipartisan sponsorship to correct
  1 20 this inequity but the present administration has
  1 21 threatened to veto such legislation; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 22    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  1 23 That the House of Representatives calls upon the
  1 24 members of Congress to pass legislation to allow
  1 25 concurrent receipt of retirement and disability
  1 26 compensation by American veterans; and
  1 27    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of
  1 28 Representatives calls upon the President of the United
  1 29 States to sign such legislation; and
  1 30    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the House of
  2  1 Representatives calls upon the members of Congress to
  2  2 override any veto of such legislation; and
  2  3    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That, upon adoption, the
  2  4 Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives shall
  2  5 prepare an official copy of this Resolution and send
  2  6 it to the members of Iowa's congressional delegation
  2  7 and to the President of the United States.
