  1  1    Section 1.  Section 321.449, subsection 5, paragraph a,
  1  2 Code 2003, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    5.  a.  Notwithstanding other provisions of this section,
  1  4 rules adopted under this section concerning physical and
  1  5 medical qualifications for drivers of commercial vehicles
  1  6 engaged in intrastate commerce shall not be construed as
  1  7 disqualifying any individual who was employed as a driver of
  1  8 commercial vehicles engaged in intrastate commerce whose
  1  9 physical or medical condition existed prior to July 29, 1996
  1 10 June 30, 1999.
  1 11                           EXPLANATION
  1 12    This bill amends a provision requiring the state department
  1 13 of transportation to adopt certain motor carrier safety rules.
  1 14 The bill establishes June 30, 1999, as the most recent date on
  1 15 which a physical or medical condition of a driver of a
  1 16 commercial vehicle engaged in intrastate commerce could be
  1 17 identified and still not disqualify the driver for a
  1 18 commercial driver's license.
