1 1 Section 1. Section 135.11, Code 2003, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 30. Adopt rules, with assistance provided
1 4 by the board of medical examiners, to require that
1 5 pediatricians provide screening for retinoblastoma during
1 6 well=baby visits at times specified by rule.
1 7 Sec 2. Section 136A.5, Code 2003, is amended to read as
1 8 follows:
1 9 136A.5 RULES, REGULATIONS, AND STANDARDS.
1 10 1. The birth defects institute, with assistance provided
1 11 by the Iowa department of public health, shall adopt rules
1 12 pursuant to chapter 17A to implement this chapter.
1 13 2. The birth defects institute, with assistance provided
1 14 by the Iowa department of public health, shall adopt rules
1 15 pursuant to chapter 17A to require that the Iowa neonatal
1 16 screening program include screening for retinoblastoma.
1 17 EXPLANATION
1 18 This bill relates to screening of newborns and children for
1 19 retinoblastoma. Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the eye in
1 20 which tumors form in the retina. The bill directs the Iowa
1 21 department of public health to adopt rules, with assistance
1 22 provided by the board of medical examiners, to require that
1 23 pediatricians provide screening for retinoblastoma during
1 24 well=baby visits at times specified by rule. The bill also
1 25 directs the birth defects institute, with assistance provided
1 26 by the Iowa department of public health, to adopt rules
1 27 pursuant to Code chapter 17A to require that the Iowa neonatal
1 28 screening program include screening for retinoblastoma.
