  1  1    Section 1.  Section 272C.2A, Code 2003, is amended to read
  1  2 as follows:
  1  3    272C.2A  CONTINUING EDUCATION MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS ==
  1  4 BARBERING AND COSMETOLOGY ARTS AND SCIENCES.
  1  5    1.  The board of barber examiners and the board of
  1  6 cosmetology arts and sciences examiners, created pursuant to
  1  7 chapter 147, shall each require, as a condition of license
  1  8 renewal, a minimum of six hours of continuing education in the
  1  9 two years immediately prior to a licensee's license renewal.
  1 10 The board of cosmetology arts and sciences examiners may
  1 11 notify cosmetology arts and sciences licensees on a quarterly
  1 12 basis regarding continuing education opportunities.
  1 13    2.  The board of barber examiners shall, in prescribing
  1 14 continuing education requirements applicable to barbers,
  1 15 establish a curriculum which is sufficiently diverse so as to
  1 16 enable a licensee to satisfy the requirements through
  1 17 instruction specific to the aspects of barbering in which the
  1 18 licensee practices.  The board shall ensure that licensees who
  1 19 do not incorporate aspects of cosmetology in their practice
  1 20 shall be able to satisfy the requirements in full through
  1 21 classes which do not include cosmetology=related instruction.
  1 22                           EXPLANATION
  1 23    This bill provides that the curriculum content available to
  1 24 barbers in satisfying continuing education requirements shall
  1 25 incorporate instruction which is specific to the aspects of
  1 26 barbering in which the barber practices.  The bill provides
  1 27 that the board of barber examiners shall ensure that barbers
  1 28 who do not incorporate aspects of cosmetology in their
  1 29 practice can fully satisfy their continuing education
  1 30 requirements through classes which do not include cosmetology=
  1 31 related instruction.
