Section 256.7, Code Supplement 2003, is amended 1 2 by adding the following new subsection: 1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 26. Adopt rules for the administration of 1 4 a program to identify and honor annually elementary and 1 5 secondary schools that succeed in increasing the number of 1 6 students enrolled in advanced science, mathematics, and 1 7 technology programs as provided in section 256.9, subsection 1 8 53. The board shall set the number of awards to be issued 1 9 annually. 1 10 Sec. 2. Section 256.9, Code Supplement 2003, is amended by 1 11 adding the following new subsection: 1 12 NEW SUBSECTION. 53. Develop and administer a program to 1 13 identify and honor annually elementary and secondary schools 1 14 that succeed in increasing the number of students enrolled in 1 15 advanced science, mathematics, and technology programs. The 1 16 purpose of the program shall be to recognize schools that have 1 17 taken the initiative to increase and encourage a diverse 1 18 population of students to enroll in advanced science, 1 19 mathematics, and technology programs. The director shall 1 20 develop an application procedure and make applications 1 21 available upon request, and shall develop criteria for the 1 22 recognition of exemplary schools and programs based on the 1 23 percentage of increase in the number of students enrolled in 1 24 advanced science, mathematics, and technology programs; the 1 25 diversity of the student population enrolled in the programs; 1 26 and the achievement levels of the students enrolled in the 1 27 programs. The director shall also establish a process to 1 28 publicly honor the recipients chosen pursuant to this 1 29 subsection and shall create a noteworthy symbol or certificate 1 30 of honor suitable for public display in the community by the 1 31 recipient schools. 1 32 EXPLANATION 1 33 This bill requires the director of the department of 1 34 education to develop and administer a program to identify and 1 35 honor annually elementary and secondary schools that succeed 2 1 in increasing the number and diversity of students enrolled in 2 2 advanced science, mathematics, and technology programs; to 2 3 develop criteria for the recognition of exemplary schools and 2 4 programs; to establish a process to publicly honor the 2 5 recipients chosen; and to create a noteworthy symbol or 2 6 certificate of honor suitable for public display in the 2 7 community by the recipient schools. 2 8 The state board of education is directed to adopt rules for 2 9 the administration of the program and to set the number of 2 10 awards to be issued annually. 2 11 LSB 6193YH 80 2 12 kh/gg/14
