  1 1 Section 1. Section 277.4, unnumbered paragraph 2, Code
1 2 2003, is amended to read as follows:
1 3 Each candidate shall be nominated by petition. If the
1 4 candidate is running for a seat in the district which is voted
1 5 for at=large, the petition must be signed by the greater of at
1 6 least ten eligible electors, or a number of eligible electors
1 7 equal in number to not less than one percent of the registered
1 8 voters of the school district, whichever is more which number
1 9 need not be more than fifty. If the candidate is running for
1 10 a seat which is voted for only by the voters of a director
1 11 district, the petition must be signed by the greater of at
1 12 least ten eligible electors of the director district or a
1 13 number of eligible electors equal in number to not less than
1 14 one percent of the registered voters in the director district,
1 15 whichever is more which number need not be more than fifty. A
1 16 petition filed under this section shall not be required to
1 17 have more than one hundred signatures.
  1 18 EXPLANATION
1 19 This bill establishes a limit on the number of eligible
1 20 electors that need to sign the nomination petition for a
1 21 candidate for an at=large seat or a seat which is voted for
1 22 only by the voters of a director district. Under current
1 23 Code, the petitions must be signed by at least 10 eligible
1 24 electors or a number of eligible electors equal in number to
1 25 not less than 1 percent of the registered voters of the school
1 26 district, whichever is more. The bill provides that the
1 27 petitions must be signed by the greater of at least 10
1 28 eligible electors or a number of eligible electors equal in
1 29 number to not less than 1 percent of the registered voters of
1 30 the school district, but provides that this number need not be
  1 31 more than 50.
