  1  1    Section 1.  INTERIM COMMITTEE == WATER QUALITY STUDY.  The
  1  2 legislative council is requested to create a water quality
  1  3 interim study committee to study the quality of this state's
  1  4 surface and subsurface waters, including drinking water
  1  5 sources.  The interim committee shall consider all major
  1  6 sources of contamination, current effluent and treatment
  1  7 standards, and practices or systems designed to prevent or
  1  8 reduce contamination.  The department of agriculture and land
  1  9 stewardship and the department of natural resources shall
  1 10 cooperate with the interim study committee.  If created, the
  1 11 interim study committee, as directed by the legislative
  1 12 council, shall report to the general assembly regarding any
  1 13 recommendations required to improve water quality in this
  1 14 state, including legislative measures to reduce contamination
  1 15 that may pose a risk to human health.
  1 16                           EXPLANATION
  1 17    This bill requests that the legislative council create a
  1 18 water quality interim study committee to study the quality of
  1 19 this state's surface and subsurface waters.  The interim
  1 20 committee is required to report findings and recommendations
  1 21 to the general assembly.
