  1  1    Section 1.  Section 216A.15, subsection 9, Code 2003, is
  1  2 amended to read as follows:
  1  3    9.  Maintain information on Adopt rules pursuant to chapter
  1  4 17A to develop a mechanism to ensure the qualifications of
  1  5 Spanish language interpreters and maintain and provide a list
  1  6 of those deemed qualified to Iowa courts, or administrative
  1  7 agencies, social service agencies, and health agencies, as
  1  8 requested.
  1  9                           EXPLANATION
  1 10    This bill provides that the commission of Latino affairs
  1 11 shall adopt rules pursuant to Code chapter 17A to develop a
  1 12 mechanism to ensure Spanish language interpreter
  1 13 qualifications.  Currently, the commission is required simply
  1 14 to maintain information on such qualifications as one of its
  1 15 statutory duties.  The bill also provides that the commission
  1 16 shall provide a list of qualified Spanish language
  1 17 interpreters to a list of agencies and entities which has been
  1 18 expanded to include social service agencies and health
  1 19 agencies.
