  1  1    Section 1.  Section 321.409, Code 2003, is amended by
  1  2 adding the following new unnumbered paragraph:
  1  3    NEW UNNUMBERED PARAGRAPH.  Beginning July 1, 2005, every
  1  4 new motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle or motorized
  1  5 bicycle, sold and subject to registration in this state shall
  1  6 be equipped with daytime running lights.  For purposes of this
  1  7 section, "daytime running lights" are head lamps that turn on
  1  8 automatically when the motor vehicle's ignition is started,
  1  9 and are overridden when regular headlights are activated.
  1 10                           EXPLANATION
  1 11    This bill requires that beginning July 1, 2005, new motor
  1 12 vehicles sold and subject to registration in this state must
  1 13 be equipped with daytime running lights.  The requirement
  1 14 applies to all motor vehicles except motorcycles and motorized
  1 15 bicycles.
  1 16    The bill defines "daytime running lights" as head lamps
  1 17 that turn on automatically when the motor vehicle's ignition
  1 18 is started, and are overridden when regular headlights are
  1 19 activated by the operator.
  1 20    A violation of a mandatory lighting equipment provision is
  1 21 punishable by a scheduled fine of $20.
