  1  1    Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  249A.34  JUVENILE INMATES OF
  1  2 PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS == MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ELIGIBILITY.
  1  3    The department shall provide coverage under the medical
  1  4 assistance program to a juvenile who is an inmate of a public
  1  5 institution as described in section 1905(a)(27)(A) of the
  1  6 Social Security Act, as codified at 42 U.S.C. }
  1  7 1396d(a)(27)(A), who would otherwise be eligible for the
  1  8 medical assistance program.  For the purposes of this section,
  1  9 "juvenile" means a person under eighteen years of age.
  1 10                           EXPLANATION
  1 11    This bill directs the department of human services to
  1 12 provide coverage under the medical assistance (Medicaid)
  1 13 program to juveniles who are considered inmates under the
  1 14 federal Social Security Act.  "Juvenile" is defined as a
  1 15 person under 18 years of age.
